Carol Filbeck - President

I have been a member of the ASG since April 2000. Until recently, I attended the Scripps Ranch Neighborhood Group. Our neighborhood group now meets at Paradise Sewing in Poway the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Until becoming President I had never held office but did participate in most of the ASG-sponsored events. In 2005 I decided it was time to repay the ASG so I decided to put my name up for President. I successfully ran for President and was elected. I took over from Diane MacPherson in January 2006 and was re-elected for the 2007 term. I have been married to a wonderful man, Russ, for 38 years this October. We have two daughters and five grandchildren. I have been retired for 5 years and love having time to pursue my hobbies now. I am a breast cancer survivor (16 years) and volunteer at Kaiser Hospital’s ROSE program for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, I have been sewing since 6th grade and enjoy all types of sewing. Although, I must admit that I am a very novice quilter and scared of free motion stippling. I sewed most of my girls’ clothing when they were little and enjoy sewing now for my grandchildren. On rare occasion, I even do a little sewing for my husband. I dabble a bit in home dec sewing and crafts. I enjoy heirloom sewing and have attended several of Martha Pullen’s seminars in Pasadena. I currently own 2 sewing machines, a Viking Designer SE and a Babylock Ellegante. I am fascinated with machine embroidery and use both machines…nice to have them both going…one sewing and one doing the embroidery. I have two sergers which I have finally learned to thread. As with many of us, I also have a collection of UFOs (unfinished objects) and a growing stash of fabric. It seems like it’s easier to buy new fabric than to sort through the stacks….and no matter how much fabric we have, it’s never the right color or pattern. Now if I could just get my husband to understand that.

Glenna Evans - 1st Vice President/Special Events

I joined ASG last year, after Kathy Scott saw me reading Threads, on the shuttle, on my way to work. They had elections coming up, and no one to run for Secretary, so I said I would. I am so glad I did. This is a wonderful organization! The San Diego Chapter is so fortunate to have Carol Filbeck (who kept the Chapter alive) as President. Our meeting are productive and fun. Please consider an open position. . . you won't regret it. This year I was elected 1st VP which means coordinating Special Events (gulp!) Thank goodness for Carol as I am like a newborn baby trying to learn the in's and out's.

Rhoda Keegan - 1st Vice President/Membership

My earliest recollection of sewing was in Jr. Hi.  I still remember the green and white gingham check dress with the mandarin collar and long ties.

Sewing has always been a part of my life as I cycled through various stages of sewing for my children, the stretch and sew era of making men's clothing, and the tailoring classes along the way.

Machine embroidery came on the scene some six years ago, and little by little I've ventured into the realm of creating baby items and embellished clothing.

From a career in accounting, then computer networking, my recent loves have centered around the woodworking classes at Palomar College and my volunteer work with the Armed Services YMCA and the Operation Kid Comfort quilts. Rhoda is also the one responsible for shopping for, cutting and putting the quilts together. She then delivers them to the ASYMCA so they can add the pictures.  She contributes many, many hours to this wonderful community service project.

Kathy Scott - Secretary

Kathy has served on the CAB for several years and was the 1st VP for 4 yrs. In 2006, in order to continue on the CAB, she ran for and was selected as Secretary. She is a member of the Poway NG.

Darlene Holland - Treasurer

I was raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota and have been a resident of San Diego for 55 years. My last job was doing accounting and office manager for a building contractor. I was there just short of 30 years retiring in June of 2000. I have been a member of ASG for approximately 10 years and am currently in my third year as Chapter Treasurer. In addition, I have been co-leader of a ng for about 5 years.
