#Sewing Machine Donation Program

Our outreach started in January 2022 with a goal of providing 15 sewing machines to the refugee community of Afghan women in East County. As of March 1, 2026, we have delivered 173 machines! All of them are serviced and ready to be used.

Marty Ornish is a quirky, fun, sustainable fiber artist. Many of her designs are from thread-worn deconstructed and reconstructed quilts as her pallet. Her zero waste designs are created from cast off scraps, found objects, and deadstock fabric. She recreates clothing, quilts, jackets, and even boots.

The Sew Sustainable April Zoom call is available to all ASG members. The link will be sent out in the ASG emails prior to the event. Marty Ornish is a member of the San Diego ASG Chapter.

Happy New Year to Our Sewing Community

Happy New Year to the San Diego Chapter of the American Sewing Guild and to members of the sewing community everywhere.

Our Neighborhood Groups participatged in and enjoyed a variety of holiday gatherings. Some met for lunch or breakfast in local restaurants. Most members had so much fun talking and enjoying the good food that they forgot to take photos!

Thank you to the retiring leaders of our ASG chapter and Welcome to new NG Leaders.

Fit and Sew: Madeline Rodriguez will retire from her position. Welcome to our new leaders, Jeanie Nashime and Nancy Donnelly.

North County Coastal: Melissa Miller will retire as NG leader to become the ASG San Diego chapter president. Welcome Yvonne Key as the leader of the North County Coastal Neighborhood Group.

San Diego chapter of the American Sewing Guild (ASG) gives to our community.

In this month’s blog we highlight some of the ways the San Diego chapter of the American Sewing Guild (ASG) gives to our community. Kathy Sterling and Andrea Towle are two of our members who bring a lifetime of love for sewing and experience to important volunteer work that benefits many service organizations in the San Diego area. They weave together their experience in teaching and coordinating donations to bring the joy of sewing and its practical value to others.

Both women have been sewing since they were children, learning originally from their mothers. Kathy was the oldest of four girls and loved to watch her mother sew. She had to wait until her feet reached the floor while sitting before she could use her mother’s Singer Featherweight sewing machine (which Kathy still uses). She took a Singer sewing class and learned to read and cut out a pattern and discovered there was a lot of information on a pattern. She started sewing her own clothes and Mom said that if she completed and wore a garment three times, she would reimburse Kathy for the cost of the materials. That motivated Kathy to make things look good. When she was sixteen her boyfriend's mom, who had no daughters, was excited to teach sewing to Kathy. From her, Kathy learned that “a pattern is the foundation, but not the end of the story.”

Kathy took her sewing machine with her to college where she studied Biology and Art. She sewed for herself and her family and later worked in a sewing machine shop in Reno, Nevada. Reno is where she first joined ASG. When she moved to Pasadena, California, Kathy enrolled in the Pasadena Community College (PCC) fashion department. She learned industry sewing techniques that were different from home sewing and followed her passion for making period costumes, science fiction and dance costumes. After graduating from PCC Kathy worked for a time in Burbank then returned to PCC where she taught for 18 years in their fashion department. It was there that she first created fabric “pass along.” In 2014 Kathy moved to Oceanside and joined the local American Sewing Guild neighborhood groups and became connected to the sewing and fashion department at Palomar College. With her move, she continued the fabric “pass along” process. Ultimately, she developed connections with many local organizations that use the fabrics that are donated to the San Diego Chapter of the ASG.

Andrea also learned to sew from her mother then continued to learn throughout junior high school, high school and college. She earned a degree in Home Economics and after raising her family accepted a teaching position as a cooking and sewing teacher in West Sacramento. Andrea taught junior high for 25 years. Andrea’s sense of humor had much to do with her success as a middle school teacher. Also, sewing and cooking were subjects that were of interest to the students. The kids learned that the sewing project came first and they must finish it before going on to cooking. Kids could come in at lunch to sew. They were motivated to cook and therefore, every sewing project got completed.

Andrea moved to San Diego from the Sacramento area in 2022 and was immediately welcomed by our San Diego ASG president, Lisa Moallemi. Andrea got involved in community service right away. She teaches sewing at the Salvation Army campus in El Cajon and at Bridge Builders in San Diego. Refugee women from Afghanistan who attend the Bridge Builders' six to eight week classes already know how to sew but the classes focus on how to use electric and electronic machines used in the U.S. At Bridge Builders, Andrea teaches how to make samples of different seam and hem finishes. After completing the class, the women are on a waiting list for donated sewing machines they can take home to use.

Kathy developed her ideas for fabric exchange and donation when a friend of her mother’s was downsizing her extensive fabric collection. Today, the San Diego Chapter of the ASG receives donations of fabric, supplies and used sewing machines through our website, https://www.sandiegoasg.org/. The process of collecting and distributing these donations is a big job. Andrea collects donations from the south part of San Diego county and Kathy from the north. In addition to loading all the boxes of fabrics these women sort through them to determine where they will be best used. Below are the organizations that receive these fabrics:

“Keep Sewing Alive” has an annual fabric sale to make fabrics available to fashion students who cannot otherwise afford to buy specialty fabrics on which to practice various techniques.
“Gently Hugged” receives flannels which they use to make kits for blankets and other baby items. These kits are distributed to sewists who make blankets and bibs for mothers.
“Dress-a-Girl” creates kits for making simple cotton dresses for girls in African countries.
“Keep Sewing Alive” helps to distribute the upholstery fabric to students at community colleges upholstery classes.
Knits are shared with the Neighborhood Group Savvy Sergers. This group will also teach a Serger class at Bridge Builders in January 2026 to women who have these machines but need help in making the most of their special features.
Visions Museum of Textile Art at Liberty Station receives fabric for their annual Veranda Sale.
Salvation Army gets bags of scraps.

The Salvation Army in El Cajon holds a class that Andrea teaches twice a month. She makes kits for tote bags with pockets. These kits are used to teach sewing techniques to beginners.

In addition to distributing fabric and notions and sewing supplies, Andrea and Kathy accept used sewing machines for the Bridge Builders sewing machine donation program. They collect the machines and take them to a local sewing machine repair expert who gets them ready. In the three years since San Diego ASG has been involved with this program, we’ve distributed 166 machines to Afghan refugee women. San Diego ASG provides the funding for the sewing machine repairs and when cash donations are made to our chapter, these are added to our sewing machine repair fund.

Oceanside Museum of Art is seeking tiny tiny art, such as an Art Quilt that is 5" X 5", for their annual fundraiser to help pay for art classes at the museum.

San Diego Chapter of the American Sewing Guild Annual Meeting

#ASG San Diego Annual Meeting

This year members of ASG San Diego enjoyed a presentation by Kandi Christian. Her talk included the similarities between couture sewing and heirloom sewing techniques with beautiful samples to illustrate the techniques. Kandi explained how to sew tucks, create Madeira applique and cutwork, and how to apply lace by machine that looks handsewn.

A highlight of the annual meeting was the “San Diego ASG Project Runway.” Members took to the “runway” while our own Teri Ang announced the sewist/models and shared descriptions of their creations.

As always, members had fun with the “What Was I Thinking?!” table of donated fabric and sewing items.

A Community Service Projects table included beautiful dresses for the SD Dress A Girl service project.

Each Neighborhood Group presented a display table showing what they have done for this year.

Thank you to outgoing Board members Pat Stilwell and Lisa Moallemi. They have both served our chapter for the last four years: Lisa as president, and Pat as secretary. San Diego ASG appreciates their leadership and service to our chapter. Incoming board members include

Melissa Miller as President and Teri Ang as Secretary. V.P. of Programs is an open position and we are looking for volunteers.

Community Service Update

In 2025 our chapter donated 167 items to Gently Hugged, including 85 burp cloths. Gently Hugged in Carlsbad was able to provide to fifty moms, clothing for Baby for one year.

Our Sewing Machine Donation program has given 161 sewing machines to Bridge Builders. All machines are serviced and ready to use.

#Judy Kessinger Master Pants Sewing Workshop was a hit!

Every participant in the workshop came prepared and ready to work. As instructed by Judy, they prepared the pattern and fabric in advnce, enabling them to get to the fun part of sewing and fitting the pants. Melissa showed her finished pants a few days later at the annual Neighborhood Group Leaders luncheon and the fit was perfect. Judy shared with Pat, one of our members, that our workshop was one of the best ever because everyone came prepared.

A fun and productive day of good conversation and a great lunch prepared by Don and Andrea.

#Canyon Quilters is hosting a holiday marketplace

Saturday, October 25, from 11-3 @ the

Cathy Hopper Friendship Center in Clairemont

4425 Bannock Avenue.

There will be quilts, fabric, and gift baskets for sale,

as well as many different items in the boutique,

along with a cafe to nourish yourself while shopping.

#Community Service Update

To date 153 sewing machines have been donated to Bridge Builders. A machine that was recently donated is in sellable condition and the proceeds will be used to fund the servicing of machines. We appreciate the sewists and their friends and family who contact us to donate sewing machines, fabric and notions. All these items support our various community service projects.

#San Diego Chapter of the American Sewing Guild Annual Meeting

Displays will be set up by each Neighborhood Group highlighting their activities since October 2024. The election of the Chapter Advisory Board members will be finalized at the annual meeting. Neighborhood Group Spotlight: Poway NG

The members of this Neighborhood Group decide together what they want to do for the upcoming months. They enjoy sharing useful projects, tips and techniques. Members take turns giving demonstrations. Recently, Joan showed how to make a hoop embroidery purse. Next month, Kathy will lead members (and guests?) to make an ingenious dog bone pillow using a free AccuQuilt pattern. The Poway NG includes sewists who live for part of the year in Oregon, Texas and New Mexico. When they return each year to their homes in California, they join their “built-in community” at Poway NG. It is something they can count on year after year.

The Poway Neighborhood Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 10:00 AM- to Noon at Paradise Sewing at 13242 Poway Road in Poway. This business has a long history of support for members of the American Sewing Guild by making their store available for ASG meetings. Peter Chang bought Paradise Sewing in December 2019 and provides a comfortable gathering place for ASG members who love to sew, share their inspiration, and who actively support service projects. The Poway NG holds Service Project Sew-Ins where they have provided, over the years, 40 pillow cases for Ronald McDonald House to give to patients, Ouch pillows for breast cancer recovering patients, Angel Gowns for babies that were stillborn at hospital, Flannel PJ’s for children in a hospital burn ward.

Poway NG’s latest service project for the last two years has been to sew burp cloths, bibs, soft toys, and blankets donated to Gently Hugged for underserved infants from birth to one year of age.

Kathy Hodges has been the Poway Neighborhood Group leader for more than 10 years. She has been sewing useful items since she took home economics in Jr. High and High School. She likes free motion embroidery and enjoys sewing pillows, bags, purses. Kathy recently shared a Denim purse made from repurposed jeans decorated with a colorful belt through the belt loops.

The Poway NG is a fun group. Come to Paradise Sewing and give them a try.

What’s New at the San Diego Chapter of the American Sewing Guild?

#Savvy Sergers NG hosts Serger Clinic

A Serger clinic was held May 29, 2025. Five participants spent 4 hours learning the basics of serging. Each participant had a mentor who assisted when there were questions or rough spots. Everybody learned something even the mentors!!

Neighborhood Group Spotlight: North County Coastal NG

Leader and Co-leader Melissa Miller and Yvonne Key have both been sewing for years. Melissa mainly sews garments and has made her own costumes while acting in Community Theater. Melissa has also worked with professional theaters as a costume consultant. A new interest for her is Shibori and Indigo dying, which she hopes to bring to the North County Coastal NG once she becomes more proficient.

Yvonne has recently become the co-leader for the group. Yvonne enjoys sewing many different kinds of projects. She sews items that she needs--dog beds, BBQ covers, etc. She designs her own patterns for baby quilts that she shares as gifts. She recently created an 18x12” cushion in the shape of a big leaf for a 12” ceramic grasshopper that lives on her patio. Yvonne’s next project will be to re-upholster a cushion for a camel saddle. She will take apart the worn cushion to make a pattern.

There are 25 members in the NCC NG and about 15-18 of them join each meeting. The North County Coastal NG is a very eclectic group with a variety of interests and skills so there is always someone there to help and give inspiration. It is fun to see the variety of things that people create and bring to share. They are active in sewing for our ASG San Diego chapter’s community service projects. Many burp cloths, receiving blankets and cloth toys have been donated to our community partner, Gently Hugged , by these talented people.

The exciting “Fabric Challenge Reveal" will occur in July. Each year the members do a fabric exchange to see what people come up with using a “what was I thinking when I bought that” fabric . It’s fun to see the creativity, humor and skill that go into transforming unwanted fabric into useful items.

The North County Coastal NG have been sewing together for many years. They are active sewists and would love to welcome new people who love to sew. Check out the Neighborhood Groups page of our website to see the variety of projects the NCCNG has planned for this year.

#Indigo Dye and Shibori Class

On May 17 three of our ASG San Diego members joined a class in San Diego to learn techniques of Shibori and indigo dyeing from Sarah Myriam Winston, who has been designing, dyeing and weaving apparel and accessories as well as preserving collectible textiles for over two decades. We each used common tools like clips and wooden disks and made stitched designs to create resist in the fabric which we then dipped into indigo dye in a warm, deep vat. It was a fascinating process and fun to go home with several new accessories that reflect an art form used in many different parts of the world.

The photos below include a meeting of the Poway Neighborhood group as they created fabric flowers for our Annual Meeting in October, the Savvy Serger NG's recent Serger Clinic, and the Shibori and indigo dye class.

Spotlight on Fit and Sew Neighborhood Group

What’s New at the San Diego Chapter of the American Sewing Guild?

Neighborhood Group Spotlight: Fit and Sew NG

Fit and Sew Neighborhood Group is just what it sounds like. A focus for this group is to sew clothing that has been custom fitted to each of the sewists. Each year the group members select a garment pattern and learn to make tissue pattern adjustments to ensure a good fit. After constructing the garment they do a final fitting to adjust for variations in the type of fabric used. In previous years, Kathleen and Anne, both certified in the Palmer Pletsch fitting method guided us in the tissue fittings. The Fit and Sew group has been growing each year. So this year, Kathleen is teaching the members to work with a partner to make the fitting adjustments. In 2025 the Fit and Sew members are making a collared button-down shirt/blouse. The project in 2024 was a T-shirt with a variety of neckline and sleeve options. 2023 found the Fit and Sew members creating jean jackets and Chanel-style jackets. In addition to fitting sessions, the meetings are devoted to learning garment construction skills, and different members sign up to share mini-presentations. The meetings always begin with San Diego ASG news and announcements and conclude with “show and share.” Fit and Sew will meet next on June 2 from 12:15-2:15 at the Vista Library. Topics for the May 5th meeting included Seams and Finishes and Pintucks and Topstitching. On June 2, Specialty Feet for sewing shirts and pockets will be presented.

Quilts of Valor is looking for some quilters to start a new Quilts of Valor group in the San Diego area. We have an excellent existing group, but have many veterans and active duty nominations to fulfill. If you are interested in wrapping our military community with healing and comforting quilts - please contact me. Thank you!

What’s New at the San Diego Chapter of the American Sewing Guild?

Sewing and Quilting Retailers

Several new sewing and quilting retailers have been added to our “County Retailers” page where you’ll find a link to each retailer’s website as well as addresses and phone numbers.

The newest addition is a List of online fabric stores.

Neighborhood Group Spotlight: El Cajon Crazies

Do you want to learn new sewing skills but don’t have time to drive to a neighborhood group meeting? The El Cajon Crazies NG meets in person and virtually. This clever group has set up a double-camera mini studio at El Cajon Sew and Vac that allows Zoom participants to clearly see what is being demonstrated during that month’s program. Join them virtually or in person on April 2 at 10:00 AM to view Lora Morrow’s demo, “A New Way to Bind.” Go to this website’s Neighborhood Groups page for the Zoom link or to contact the leader, Ruth Gessler. Each meeting of the El Cajon Crazies also includes a time for sharing their newest projects and a novel approach to “What was I thinking?” After the meeting, participants can select from fabric, sewing tools, and all things related to sewing in the “trunk show” of the parking lot. If you have items that others might enjoy, bring them in your car’s trunk. Additionally, this group consistently participates in community service projects, submitting their service project hours to the group leader. Thank you, El Cajon Crazies, for your commitment to community service.

Sewing Machine donations update:

Our outreach and partnership with Bridge Builders Network started in January, 2022 with a goal of providing 15 sewing machines to the Afghan women in East County. To date, we have delivered 128 machines! All of them are serviced and ready to be used. Our thanks to the many people of our community who contact us with sewing machines to donate. We often hear, “This machine was very special to my (mom, aunt, friend). I don’t need it but I want to be sure it goes to someone who will love it.” These donated machines are well loved and used by our local San Diego neighbors.

The San Diego ASG Annual Summer Retreat

The San Diego ASG Annual Summer Retreat will be held June 16-19 at the Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center in Temecula Wine Country. Join us for uninterrupted sewing in a large, open studio space, great food and accommodations, and best of all, the camaraderie of other creative people who love to sew. Neighborhood Group Spotlight: Savvy Sergers

#Savvy Sergers

All members and interested (“not yet” members) are invited to join an exciting and informative meeting of the Savvy Sergers--a group of sewists dedicated to using their serger machines for far more than seam finishing. They work on a variety of different projects. Sometimes they work on craft designs--see the photos below for a variety of zipper pouches. Or they may create home decorating items like flatlock placemats and rolled edge napkins. Garment construction can also make use of the serger by using decorative stitches in addition to construction stitches. This creative and savvy group uses the serger for at least one part of every project. Savvy Serger Co-Leaders, Andrea Towle and Pat Stilwell, recently purchased a variety of decorative threads using the modest annual stipend that is provided to each Neighborhood Group (NG). Work with these decorative threads will be the topic for their March 19th meeting.

At each meeting, following a brief discussion of ASG topics, a member will demonstrate a technique. Members actively volunteer to provide demonstrations with everyone learning from each other. Following the program there is a time for members to show and share projects they’ve recently created. Some meetings involve a “Sew-in” during which everyone works on a serger related technique sample project.

At a recent show and share - Patti showed a dress with a gathered waist that she made on the serger, Jeanie showed some MahJong cards she made for her MahJong group using vinyl on the front and rolled hem on the edges and Phyllis showed a simple block quilt top she tried using the serger.

The Savvy Serger group started in October 2023 and the number of participants at a meeting currently ranges from 4-10. Existing members are always eager to share their knowledge with new members. They welcome all levels of expertise and “beginners” need not feel intimidated. Whether an experienced serger or one who is new to serging, participants learn something new every month. They meet at the Mira Mesa Library, 8505 New Salem Street, San Diego 91026 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. Currently, this active group is planning their next Serger Clinic. This will involve a review of serger basics followed by a demonstration and practice of additional stitches (rolled hem, flatlock, etc.) and projects that are possible using these clever machines. This will be a two-part clinic and dates will be scheduled based on the availability of the Mira Mesa Library space. What’s New in 2025?

The San Diego chapter of the American Sewing Guild (ASG) has been busy planning our projects for 2025.

San Diego ASG Annual Sewing Retreat: Monday-Thursday June 16-19, 2025 at Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center in Temecula.
Sewing classes: September 4, 2025 from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM. Judy Kessinger, a nationally known instructor, will conduct a pants construction class. Planning for additional classes (in person and via Zoom) is underway.
San Diego ASG Annual meeting : October 11, 2025. Each year we feature a guest speaker to provide inspiration, new skills and ideas to our members. We are in the process of selecting from several potential speakers who are widely known for their expertise and excellent teaching. Our neighborhood groups exhibit displays of the projects undertaken throughout the year. Members’ contributions for community service sewing projects are collected. We exchange fabric and notions from our personal collections.

Neighborhood Groups (NG’s)

In addition to plans for our chapter, our neighborhood groups are setting up programs and projects to keep our members busy and connected throughout the coming year.

Below are highlights from two of our NG’s . Please go to the Neighborhood Groups page on our website to learn what each of our groups will work on this year and when/where they will meet.

The Fit & Sew Neighborhood Group plans to spend 2025 working to perfect a blouse pattern. At their January 6th meeting, each member brought their pattern and fabric to show to the group. They will use the tissue fitting method to make adjustments so that each member creates their own well-fitting pattern. For the additional meetings of 2025, members will present methods for different aspects of blouse construction: cuffs, tower placket, collar and collar stand, darts, etc. Come join the Fit & Sew NG and create your own custom blouse pattern.

The North County Coastal Neighborhood Group ’s January meeting was titled “Sew Your Valentine”. Members brought Valentine themed items they had sewn, in an effort to inspire each other on items they can sew for Valentine’s Day. The group also had a show and share with members showing their current creations. Member Pat Stilwell displayed the capsule wardrobe she sewed after attending the “Sew…. A Fashion Retreat” offered by Judy Kessinger last fall. Pat created two pairs of slacks, several tops, a vest and a jacket. Member Julie Pinell showed off several bags she recently completed. Julie is the go-to person for all things bags. All the bags were adorable, but one in particular, a cross body sling, the Mini Traveller bag by Kandou Patterns, caught everyone’s eye. Julie has agreed to lead a class on sewing the Mini Traveller bag later this year at a North County Coastal meeting. Community Service

Like many sewing guilds, our chapter has actively participated in community service projects. For detailed information visit our Community Service Projects and Opportunities page.

Highlights include:

Act of Sewing Kindness: “Gently Hugged” is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) organization entering its 13th year of operation. They acknowledged and thanked the San Diego Chapter of The American Sewing Guild for their support this past year in helping to clothe local newborns who would otherwise go without. Donations from the Guild were processed, packaged and delivered to hospitals and social service agencies throughout San Diego County and ultimately made their way to newborn babies in need.

In 2024 contributions from the Guild totaled 403 beautiful hand crafted items.

Making a Difference one Sewing Machine at a time: We began partnering with Bridge Builder’s Network in January 2022 to provide sewing classes and sewing machines to women our refugee communities. To date, we have provided 118 working sewing machines which were donated to the SDASG. Through fundraising efforts and occasional cash donations we pay to have the donated machines repaired and serviced, ready for use by the recipients.

For 2025 our chapter is seeking additional Community Service Projects through non-profit organizations that are local to the San Diego area. Please visit the Contact Us page with ideas you may have for community service projects.

#Gratitude and Giving

The winter months seem to be a time when people everywhere reflect on their many blessings and express gratitude for what they have. Feelings of gratitude inevitably lead to a focus on giving to others. The San Diego Chapter of the American Sewing Guild is involved throughout the year on giving to various community partners. You can learn more about these organizations on the “Community Service Projects and Opportunities” page of our website.

Our president, Lisa Moallemi, attends many of our Neighborhood Group (NG) meetings, often bringing kits of donation items that members can take home and sew up. These include baby blankets and quilts, burp cloths, bibs, and soft toys that are just the right size for a baby to grasp. Our Annual Retreat in June found many of our members sewing items to be donated, in addition to projects they brought to work on.

#San Diego ASG Neighborhood Groups

The North County Coastal neighborhood group conducted a sew-in on August 10, 2024 to make kitchen items for a local church that has generously provided a space for the group to hold their monthly meetings.

On October 9, the Poway NG held a mini-sew-in to create bibs and burp cloths to be added to the tables of donations collected at our annual meeting on October 19.

The El Cajon Sew Crazies do community service individually and record their hours monthly.

During the 3rd Quarter members donated to the following organizations:

Door of Hope-12 towels and 3 quilts. San Pasqual foster Academy -4 quilts and 4 pillowcases. East county animal shelter -42 dog beds. VA- La Jolla -27 walker bags. Stitching Sisters -charity quilt. Pregnancy Care Center- baby quilt. Grace Covenant Church-large cart cover.

VFW women's Council-tote bag.

In addition, they provide hours of volunteer sewing classes:

Bridge Builders- Sewing lessons 34 hrs.

Salvation Army - Sewing lessons-5 hrs.

Public Library - Sewing lessons- 4hrs.

At our Annual Meeting in October, tables were filled with items that our members had sewn for donation to our community partners.

#Sewing Machine Donations

San Diego ASG is proud of our successful Sewing Machines Donations Project. ASG outreach began in January 2022 with a goal to provide 15 sewing machines to the Afghan women in East County. As of October 2024, we have delivered 100 machines. All of them are serviced and ready to be used. Women in the sewing class at Bridge Builder’s Network in El Cajon are very appreciative of all these machines.

Students take the 8 session sewing class and then are placed on a waiting list for a sewing machine to take home. Many know how to sew, they are just getting used to the machines and learning new skills. The teachers for the class include Andrea Towle, one of our NG group leaders.

ASG has collected 108 machines as of this date. We are always looking for sewing machines, thread, needles and fabric (3 yard lengths in dark colors). Cash donations to ASG can be used to supplement our sewing machine repair fund.

ASG San Diego Hosts Guest Speaker Judy Kessinger of Fit Nice System at Annual Meeting

The San Diego Chapter of ASG members held their annual meeting on Saturday, October 19 at North Oaks Community Center. Guest speaker Judy Kessinger of Fit Nice System discussed sewing garments made to fit and entertained her audience with humorous anecdotes about her teaching and sewing preferences. She claimed she doesn’t like buttonholes and most of her jackets are made with zippers, preferably shiny, silver ones. She loves to use glue to attach some of her buttons and trims. ASG members learned many new tips for garment sewing from her talk. To illustrate her points, Judy modeled numerous tops and jackets that she had constructed. The community center was a comfortable venue and the catered lunch of sandwiches or salads was excellent. Long tables were covered with a variety of fabrics. Our ASG chapter calls this the “What was I thinking?” fabric exchange. Members bring fabrics they don’t need and take what they like.

Then on October 29th ASG San Diego held an in-person sewing class with Judy Kessinger. There were 15 members and 2 non-members in attendance. Using her Master top pattern, Judy drew a pattern for each student. Students were then instructed to use their personal pattern to cut out the T-shirt from their fabric. Next, only shoulder seams were sewn and Judy assessed the basic fit of the shoulders, arm holes and neckline. Depending on the neckline the student chose, they were given specific instructions for cutting the neckline piece. Once necklines were attached, sleeves were sewn in using the flat method. Then side seams were sewn up and adjusted, if necessary. Examples of some of the T-shirts made during the class are seen in the photos below. ASG San Diego is considering hosting Judy in 2025 to teach her Master Pants pattern. More info coming in early 2025.

Happy Hoopers meets at Sewing Machines Plus in San Marcos on the second Monday of every month (except March, June, September & December) from 1 PM – 3 PM.

# Sewing machine donations top 100 !!

Our outreach started in Jan. 2022 with a goal of providing 15 sewing machines to the Afghan women in East County. Now we have delivered 100 machines! All of them are serviced and ready to be used. They are delivered to Bridge Builder’s Network in El Cajon for a sewing class every Friday where Afghan and Syrian women learn to sew. At the end of 8 sessions, ladies are put on a waiting list for machines to take home. San Diego ASG is proud to have initiated this donation and delighted to see it continue . Thank you to all who donated machines over this 2 & 1/2 year period. Thank you also to one of our own members, who is a sewing teacher there.

#El Cajon Sew Crazies

This month’s featured Neighborhood Group (NG), El Cajon Sew Crazies, is a diverse group of people who enjoy quilting, machine embroidery, construction sewing and serger projects. A unique feature of this group is that participants can attend every meeting on Zoom or in person at El Cajon Sew and Vac on 1077 Broadway in El Cajon. With the aid of a multiple-camera setup, Zoom participants have a great view of the meeting demonstrations and presentations. Each meeting is planned with the exciting and informative program first, followed by a short ASG business meeting. Finally, members share projects that are completed or “under construction.” In August, Carolyn Baker showed the group how to make tassels from construction thread. The El Cajon Sew Crazies found this very informative and they love learning new things. Because the members are involved in such a variety of sewing activities there are always new things to learn. In September, they will share their expressions of “Michael’s Challenge.” Are you curious to see how each member of El Cajon Crazies transformed a length of scrubs fabric to make something useful and interesting? If you want to satisfy your curiosity, join them on Zoom or in person on September 4.

The Oxford dictionary defines a serger as a sewing machine used for overcasting to prevent material from fraying at the edge. Oh, but it is so much more!! Did you know that you can not only finish seams but you can gather, create wired ribbon, used decorative thread to embellish a garment, completely construct a garment and many more functional and fun techniques. Want to try your hand at all these techniques?

The Savvy Serger Neighborhood Group explores these techniques through demonstration and projects to acquaint ourselves with the versatility of our machines using our machines to the fullest. Our project for August and September is to practice different T-shirt necklines using the serger as the principal sewing machine. Kits are provided with prepared fabric

Come join our group for fun, friendship and Serger Savvy. We welcome all levels of expertise. We learn from each other – sewing friends helping sewing friends.

# Sewing Machine donations continue. So far, 73 sewing machines have been serviced and donated to a class in El Cajon that teaches recent immigrants to sew. We are proud of our contribution! #Summer Sewing Retreat

Among the many benefits of being a member of San Diego ASG is the opportunity to participate in the annual retreat held at the Vina---Lestonnac Retreat Center in Temecula’s beautiful wine country.

Imagine three days of sewing in a large, well-lit space with an entire table (or two, or three?) all to yourself and your sewing machine(s). There are ironing boards, cutting tables and dress forms along the perimeter for anyone to use. Other sewists sit on either side or across the tables; everyone works on their projects, focused, yet happy to share tips or give advice when asked. I am a passionate sewist who is still learning and felt privileged to listen to the stories of other women who have taught sewing at every level. Everyone is willing to share ideas and supplies.

“Here’s that YouTube video about how to make this zippered pouch.”

In addition to creating quilts, new garments and elaborately upcycled jean jackets, some members produced lovely items to contribute to Community Service Projects--baby blankets, bibs, burp cloths.

Spread across a table near the door is an enormous variety of snacks. You can stand up, walk around and marvel at the work everyone is doing while munching on fruit or chocolate, crackers or chips, then return to your station refreshed. You dive into your work and suddenly it’s dinner time. Everyone walks up the fruit tree and herb-lined path to the dining hall. How wonderful to enjoy a delicious, healthy meal prepared by a chef and his team while you were sewing! No dishes to wash, just head back down the hill to the San Diego ASG’s designated sewing space. By 7:30 PM most people are ready to head up to their rooms for a good night’s sleep, but for those who want to stay and create there is no limit to how long you can sew.

The San Diego ASG Annual Retreat is truly an inspiring experience of laughter, fun and learning. The retreat date for 2025 has already been reserved. If you’re not already a member, join ASG and mark your calendars for Monday, June 16- Thursday, June 19, 2025.

North County Coastal Neighborhood Group (NG) meets the 2nd Saturday of each month at 3780 Pio Pico in Carlsbad, New Song Church, from 10-12am.

The members quilt, sew clothing, handbags, knit and crochet, it's an eclectic group! They have charity sewing projects like Diana's Angels and Dress A Girl, dresses sent to Africa. On a recent Saturday, they had open sewing, where members bring their machines and sew their own projects. Several members knitted and crocheted baby items for donation. One member made gift bags and will teach them to the group soon. Another member did hand stitching on a designer jacket she is working on. Always there is "sew and tell" at the end of each meeting. Our upcoming Annual Meeting on October 19, 2024 will be held at Oaks North Community Center in Rancho Bernardo. Judy Kessinger will be the guest speaker. Her topic will be Fit to be Fabulous.

Judy Kessinger will also offer a class for ASG members on October 29, 2024. In this class, participants will draft a top pattern from the measurements Judy takes and then create a test sample. Judy will then help fit/adjust the sample. Known as “The Fit Doctor,” Judy, through her classes, videos and website, has touched the lives of countless women, teaching them the tricks of looking trim and feeling fantastic by simply fitting themselves properly. Neighborhood Group (NG) Highlights:

One of San Diego ASG’s Neighborhood Groups, Fit and Sew NG meets on the first Monday from 10:00-12:00 at Sewing Machines Plus in San Marcos. When there is a 5th Monday the Fit and Sew NG schedules a special workshop. On Monday, April 29 participants learned to make a Fabric Ball Necklace. Kathy gathered all the supplies needed to assemble the necklaces from fabric tubes that the members created at home and brought to the workshop. Kathy (and other sewists) also brought extra fabric tubes so that everyone could try the technique, even if they didn’t do their preparation in advance. This was a fun way to create something useful with favorite fabrics and they make great gifts!

# Sewing Machine Donations continue to be collected, many from outside our ASG community. In less than 2 years we have donated 56 sewing machines, lots of fabric and supplies to other sewing groups.

Serger NG meets January 26th at the Mira Mesa Library Community Room, 8405 New Salem, SD 92126, from 10-12. Featured program - Flat lock stitch. Demonstration and show and share. Future programs, field trips and projects will be discussed at the meeting.

Since our next meeting is scheduled on New Year’s Day we’ll be dark.

We are planning a trip to Mood Fabrics in LA on January 29.

#Sewing Machine Donations Update

Since January 2022, ASG San Diego has collected fabric, sewing supplies and sewing machines for refugee families in East County. To date we have donated 44 sewing machines, serviced and ready to sew!! The machines go to a sewing class for Syrian and Afghan refugee women in El Cajon. Patterns for children’s clothing, fabric and supplies have also been given over recent months. When we accept donations of commercial machines and upholstery fabrics Kathy Sterling finds homes for them with other local organizations. Andrea Towle takes some donations to our local Native nations reservations and Mexico. We try to keep fabric out of the landfill! Great job Kathy and Andrea!

We have a conflict with a library event for the 30th of September so we have rescheduled to

Friday September 29th from 10-2.

Recap of last meeting.

1. Mary Curry brought her regular machine and her serger to demonstrate how she constructs the neckline of a t-shirt using ribbing,

2. Everyone had their pattern and fabric ready to begin next month. It will be time saving if each person has their t-shirt cut out before the meeting

3. The group needs a name and the following have been suggested. Feel free to suggest more. We will take a vote in September.

ASG #Teach Girl Scouts to sew 7/29/2023

Twenty-six Girl Scouts were in attendance for the sewing lesson at the Upas street office along with four ladies from ASG:Lisa Moallemi, Andrea Towle, Cathy Gomez and Lorine DeHuff. The girls were divided into three groups which rotated through three stations. Station 1 practiced threading a sewing machine and sewing on cloth. Station 2 learned to sew on a button and Station 3 did hand sewing. The girls were attentive through the whole morning. The Girl Scouts are looking forward to doing another sewing lesson so if you’re interested in helping let Lisa Moallemi know.

#TEACHING SEWING TO REFUGEES IN EL CAJON

#SERGER CLINIC was held on April 22, 2023 at the Mira Mesa Library from 10-3. (pictured above) 8 members were coached by other members on threading, tension settings for different fabrics and changing a needle. According to the evaluation forms, it was a huge success! Possibly another basic serger clinic in the fall? We already have people on the waiting list! IF you want to be included in the next one, please email Nancy Bensimon.

The date for the Girl Scout sewing class is set for Sunday, May 7 at 9am at the Girl Scout location on Upas Street.

#TEACHING SEWING TO REFUGEES IN EL CAJON

Our donated sewing machines (31 so far) go directly into refugee homes, the fabric and supplies have been going to a sewing class in East County. Thanks to all who donated fabric and supplies in Feb and March at the NG Meetings! Our next donation period is in the fall. Most needed items are irons, needles and notions. No more fabric at this time, thanks.

One of our members, Andrea Towle , who attends Fit & Sew and El Cajon Sew Crazies is now teaching there. Here is her story:

“Bridge Builders Sewing Class is a faith-based outreach helping refugees in the San Diego area. They meet every Friday 3-6pm in El Cajon. Ten to fifteen women share five sewing machines with only four helpers. They could use more help. I was received well by the women. They were very friendly and excited to work on their new project, zippered bags. An interpreter helped with vital instructions. I assisted the ladies when they experienced trouble. If you are interested in helping to volunteer, call David at (619 )417-0631 to arrange it.”

Mira Mesa Library from 10-1. 10 members will be coached by other members on threading, tension settings for different fabrics and changing a needle.

We need 2 more experienced sergers to act as mentors. No Co Coastal NG Meeting on Feb 11th! The room was lively as they welcomed 3 new members to the group! (Pictured above) Your NG Leader has the National Brochure with SD insert all ready for you to invite a sewing friend to come see what we do. Anyone can attend 2 meetings before joining. Who do you know who would LOVE to have a room full of sewing friends?

MARCH NEIGHBORHOOD GROUP MEETING - bring # donations for the Afghan and Syrian refugees in El Cajon taking sewing classes. Most needed items are irons, pins, needles, marking tools, measuring tools, scissors and fabric for clothing in 1 yard min cuts. They are ‘sew’ appreciative of our donations. We have now donated 28 machines, all serviced and ready! Thanks for your generosity ladies!

# CHARITY SEWING CONTINUES - with our ASK program (Acts of Sewing Kindness) the bibs, burp clothes, and receiving blankets are fun to make at home. All our items go to Gently Hugged. We have gifted over 600 so far in 2022. Great work everyone!

New Year! New opportunities continuing all year-

INVITE A FRIEND MEMBERSHIP DRIVE 2023

A NEW YEAR is the perfect time to “invite a friend” to an ASG Neighborhood Group Meeting! Your NG Leader has National ASG brochures available with an insert telling about our San Diego ASG activities. Hand these out to sewing friends, neighbors, at quilt guilds or sewing classes you go to. Carry them in your car, purse or sewing bag. Fill out the back of the insert with your name, phone and your NG for a more personal invitation. At the end of 2023, we will see who has invited the most new paying members and there will be a prize : one year free membership! We have a wonderful opportunity to invite MORE SEWING FRIENDS into our ASG groups!

Other charity sewing continues this year too-

Acts of Sewing Kindness (ASK) - over 600 items made last year. Keep sewing baby items and we will continue to get them to Gently Hugged.

Starting in Feb-March-

Donations for Refugees continue - our donated sewing machines are so appreciated by Afghan and Syrian refugee women in El Cajon that we are continuing that in 2023. In addition, we can collect sewing supplies like scissors, needles, tape measures and markers plus fabric in 1yard minimums. During Feb and March you can bring your donations (new or used) to your NG meeting and we will distribute them in early April to the Sewing Class for refugee women in El Cajon. We are making a difference in the lives of sewers new to our country.

Serger Clinic - many members have shown interest in a one-on-one clinic where members help other members on the basics of serger threading, stitches, etc. A questionaire is available to all members to determine how many would love more training and how many would be willing to be the mentor. The questionaire went out as a Constant Contact on Jan. 15TH. It will also be linked in the Needle Network coming out soon. Or copy and paste this link into your computer and pull up the survey. Get it completed by Feb 1st. please. The date might be April. ONLY 5 PEOPLE HAVE RESPONDED so far, let’s hear from more of you!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL OUR SEWING FRIENDS

AS 2022 COMES TO A CLOSE, WE WANT TO WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!

We hope you are able to spend time with family and friends and enjoy this special time of year.

Looking back on the year, we can all be proud of the work we did: 550 baby items (and counting) and 23 sewing machines donated (and counting). Both of these projects have made a positive impact in our county for those in need. We hosted a terrific Annual Meeting and workshop with Marla Kazell, held a sew-in in September, started this BLOG and initiated our "Invite a Friend" membership campaign.

Next year we hope to offer you a serger clinic for hands-on learning with other members and a field trip to see incredible couture gowns by the designer Gua Pei. Stay tuned for updates in the BLOG, the Needle Network and the Calendar of Events on our website.

Thank you to each of our members for all the creative projects you share and the fun spirit you bring to each Guild meeting. Thanks also to our Neighborhood Group leaders and CAB Board for all their time and efforts in planning . Special thanks to our President, Lisa Moallemi for guiding us this year.

KOOS BAG WORKSHOP - # ASK PROJECTS- DRESS A GIRL PROGRAM INFO

#ASK project now complete for 2022 but members who wish to continue sewing bibs and burp clothes on their own may do so. Turn in finished items to your NG leader. We are so pleased with participation of this year-long effort, over 500 items were sewn with TLC and donated to Birthline and Gently Hugged. See the article written about us in the local RB paper, link is on Community Service tab.

#Dress A Girl community service opportunity -

some of our members are sewing easy slip-on dresses for girls in the Americas and Africa. Easy instructions and details are posted on the Community Service tab . Drop-off locations for the dresses are included. Their motto- every girl deserves a dress!

#Koos bag workshop was presented by Marla Kazell on October 16th, a day after our Annual Meeting. All the tips and tricks for designing a custom look a la Koos Van Den Akker resulted in completed bags that are eye-catching. Shown above is Lisa Moalemmi’s bag.

#Tool Time- all about grommets by Pam Bechill

If, for some reason you find you need to reinforce a hole with a metal “frame”, I have the perfect solution. Earlier this year, I decided to replace my outdoor umbrella fabric with Sunbrella, and needed to reinforce the hole with a metal grommet at the very top center that connected it to the frame.

I was able to find a grommet set at the hardware store that just fit the hole I needed to reinforce. These sets come in various sizes and the largest size could be used to attach a metal frame around a hole large enough to run a curtain rod thru. The one I needed could create up to a 1 inch hole where I then could install the metal frame.

The process is really very easy. The kit comes with a wooden backer, several sizes of hole punches, several sizes of metal frames ( grommets) and an anvil. I would recommend practicing on a piece of fabric to get the hang of it but all you need to do is mark your fabric where you want the hole to go then put the piece of wood provided in the kit underneath the fabric. Pick the correct size hole punch you want your hole to be and place it on the marked spot that you have made. Using a hammer, tap on the hole punch until it creates the perfect hole.

Next you need to place the anvil with the bottom, part of the grommet underneath your fabric, so that the grommet will come through the hole. You then place the front part of the grommet on the front of the fabric, slipping it over the piece from the back and insert the the Punch body into the grommet, hammer them together. The back and the front of the grommet will completely frame the hole.

There are some very good visual instructions on the back of the kit. Easy Peezy.

#Sewing Machine Donations

We are now up to 23 sewing machines, 1 iron and 26 pairs of scissors donated to the refugee sewing class in El Cajon. They are so happy to get our items. Thanks to all for donating! Check out the photo of the sewing class here on the website under Community Service Projects.

#“Invite a Friend” Membership Drive

Our Neighborhood Group leaders have started handing out ASG National brochures so we can all “Invite a Friend” to our NG meetings. We added an insert with specific info on our SD Chapter. Take a few with you and be ready to invite the neighbor who sews, the friend who embroiders and the people you meet in a quilt class. Brochures can be mailed out to members who do not attend NG meetings. Please email Nancy Bensimon at sewcrazynancy@me.com. Membership Drive will continue in 2023.

#Tool Time

Sewing tools come from all over -- not only sewing retailers, but also hardware stores, the kitchen, even linen departments. The clear plastic bags for sheet sets are usually heavy-duty, oversized and have a zipper closure. I've found they are perfect for storing and organizing patterns, especially those in oversized envelopes. I have a lot of patterns and these bags help me to organize different categories, such as coats and outerwear, children's, home dec, etc. The bags make it easy to quickly find just what I'm looking for. Eventually, I hope to have all of my patterns organized and labeled by type. Also, I have to admit that my favorite aspect of using these bags is...they're free. I just have to buy a few more sheet sets!

#Sew-In In honor of September being National Sewing Month , we held a sew-in at Mira Mesa library on Sept 24th. We had 9 sewers working on our charity project, #ACTS OF SEWING KINDNESS (ASK) , sewing bibs and burp clothes. Pre-cut items were quickly completed. Lunch and chatting was fun.

Our total count for the years’ sewing was:

bears- 140

blankets- 45

bibs- 203

burps- 149

misc- 6

total - 543

Birthline and Gently Hugged were happy to have our donations.

#TOOL TIME: Frixion Erasable Marking Pen

The Frixion erasable marking pen is a must-have in my sewing room. This marking pen features a unique thermo-sensitive ink. Draw on your fabric to trace, or mark stitching/hem lines. Simply use light heat from your iron to remove the markings once they are no longer needed. The markers come in a variety of colors. Available at Amazon and locally at Daiso ($1.75). I find the red and blue work most effectively on most fabric. Note: always test on a sample of your fabric first.

#PhD Challenge at Annual Meeting

Get Ready! Find one to three PhDs (Projects Half Done) that you want to finish. Fill out an entry form for the PhD Challenge which will be sent to you via email around August 15. Submit the entry form, complete your project(s) and bring the completed project to the annual meeting for fan voting. The fan favorite will receive a one year membership extension. #TOOL TIME : The Jean-A-Ma-Jig by Dritz is often overlooked. This little tool is so helpful when you need to sew a hem around a jean leg and the seam is too high, causing the machine to jump. Just slide your Jean-A-Ma-Jig, sometimes called a Hump Jumper, under the back of the presser foot to level the foot and off you go. It has a thin end and a thick end and gets pushed out the back of the foot as you sew. Handy. Thanks to Pam Bechill for reminding us of this tool.

#ASK PROJECTS UPDATE :

We are half-way thru our year-long community service project: making burp clothes, bibs, hats, blankets and stuffed animals for newborns donated to Birthline and Gently Hugged. Machines were given last summer and Hope For San Diego had a waiting list for more machines. We were happy to offer these 13.
